Bangkok airport seizures

On November 25, 2008, People's Alliance for Democracy members initiated an armed takeover of Bangkok's two major airports, Don Mueang International Airport and Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The government unsuccessfully attempted to order the military to end the protests. Instead, General Anupong Paochinda, head of the military, has urged the PAD to end the protests and for the government to resign so that new elections can take place. As the siege dragged on, both sides opened fire and at one point explosions were heard.

On November 27, the government declared the second state of emergency of the year to help it disperse the protesters as negotiations with police failed to end the crisis. The police ordered the protesters to leave the airports, which they refused to do. There are still substantial fears that the seizures will end violently.
